3rd European Rice Congress in Lisbon

Eurostars Universal Lisboa, 15 November 2023 – from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

After Paris and Milan, the third edition of the European Rice Congress makes a stop in Lisbon, attracting chefs, restaurateurs, journalists, influencers, agronomists and researchers to the Eurostars Universal Lisboa (Avenida D. João II, lote1.12.1, Parque das Nações).

During the meeting entitled “Rice, climate change and water management. Challenges for European rice.”, scheduled for 15 November, a topic closely linked to current events will be addressed: the inescapable relationship between rice cultivation and water in the light of the consequences of climate change.

Marco Romani, head of the agronomy and crop protection department of the Rice Research Centre, will talk about the agronomic and environmental sustainability of rice cultivation, focusing on the sustainable use of water resources. This will be followed by a talk by Corrine Romero, Secretary General of the Syndicat des Riziculteurs de France et Filière, focusing on agricultural techniques that contribute to preserving the ecological balance of wetlands and protecting biodiversity, while Pedro Monteiro, President of Casa do Arroz, will illustrate the unique varietal heritage of Portuguese japonica rice.

At the end of the conference, there will be a moment dedicated to the press, where the representatives of the three promoting bodies, the Director General of Ente Nazionale Risi, Roberto Magnaghi, the President of Casa do Arroz, Pedro Monteiro, and Corrine Romero of Syndicat des Riziculteurs de France et Filière will present the objectives of the project and the results of the initiatives promoted so far.

To highlight the versatility of European rice in the preparation of different recipes, from the most traditional to the most innovative, a show-cooking session will finally follow during which a chef will create live rice dishes, highlighting the prominent role of this cereal in European gastronomic tradition.
